Companies Gain Agility by Changing Nearshore for Offshore Services

Companies that use outsourcing functions that are not their core competency, such as IT or HR, is nothing new. This trend started early in the 1990s and has only increased in pace since then. To that point, in 2016, the number of jobs outsourced from the United States reached 1,457,000, with the IT sector leading the way. Computer programmers and software engineers are in the highest demand with 211,700 outsourced positions in 2015. Choosing to outsource may be due to a variety of reasons though, historically, saving time and money is at the forefront. While cost savings remain a primary goal, the evolution of outsourcing has trended towards businesses’ desire to tap into the worldwide knowledge base when they are unable to obtain the resources locally.

Globally speaking, there are two different ways of outsourcing, based primarily on geographical proximity, known as offshoring and nearshoring. In the past, there was a preference for offshoring to distant regions with an eye toward cost-cutting. Indeed, the cost-cutting criteria held the highest percentage of consideration for offshoring, ranging from 80% to 90% of the overall rationale. However, this decision failed to adequately consider other crucial aspects to a company’s long-term vitality, and, since then, the U.S. companies have been moving their production back to the Americas, favoring a shorter region-based supply chain. This emerging trend for nearshoring is continuing to grow due to the desire for a more collaborative relationship, faster responsiveness, and decreased turnaround time.

When speaking specifically about software development methodology, different business practices are apparent between offshore and nearshore providers.
